READ AN EXCERPT · CHAPTER ONE
The rooster started up before the sun did, and Jewel was fairly sure he was doing it just to spite her. She lay still for a moment under the quilt, listening to him carry on outside her window, and let herself remember, just for a second, the sound of the radio her mother used to leave on in the kitchen, and the smell of coffee that wasn't Auntie Mimi's coffee, which could probably strip paint. It had been almost a year since the accident. Long enough that the missing didn't knock her flat anymore. It just sat with her, quiet, like a passenger who'd learned not to talk too much.
"Jewel Marie, if I have to come up those stairs, you are not going to like how fast I move for a woman my age!"
That was Auntie Mimi, hollering from the bottom of the stairwell, and Jewel was up and out of bed before the sentence finished.
